The Story Behind Our $50 Million Nonprofit Revenue Generation Goal

Where Our $50 Million Goal Really Came From
When people ask where our $50 million nonprofit revenue generation goal came from, I don’t start with strategy meetings or planning sessions. I go back to one random golf game in China.
I was 29. I had just signed the dotted line for my first home—a one-bedroom condo in Richmond Hill. I had my finances all figured out (I’m a numbers person, after all).
Down payment? ✔️
Monthly budget? ✔️
Contingency? ✔️
I was proud. I was ready.
Then I flew to visit my parents, and my dad took me golfing. We don’t talk often—maybe once a year, if that—but on the course, we chatted about the condo. And out of nowhere, he said:
“I don’t have money for you.”
I hadn’t asked for help. I didn’t need help. But wow—it stung. Because where I come from, a lot of parents express love by helping with the down payment… sometimes even buying the whole place. That’s what happened with my brother.
In that moment, I didn’t say much. But inside, I made a promise:
I’m going to figure this out. On my own. I’ll build something I can rely on—because I’ll never depend on someone else to rescue me.
That was the moment I understood the power of financial independence. And that’s the heart of our Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) at OTUS.
Our Mission: $50 Million in Nonprofit Revenue Outside of Dues and Donations
We’re on a mission to help nonprofits raise $50 million in new, sustainable revenue—outside of dues and donations—through smarter nonprofit revenue generation strategies.
Because I see too many amazing nonprofit organizations struggling year after year—not because the work isn’t valuable, but because the money doesn’t line up.
Grant cycles, donor fatigue, unpredictable funding… it’s exhausting. And it leaves leaders reacting, not building.
It’s time to change that.
This Goal Isn’t About a Number. It’s About Freedom.
Freedom to plan ahead.
Freedom to invest.
Freedom to say yes to bold ideas—the ones that directly support your mission and make a real difference.
Imagine what your nonprofit could do with the right financial foundation:
-
Send one more bassinet to a new mom who can’t afford it
-
Help one more person break free from addiction
-
Support one more parent navigating their child’s substance use
-
Fund the advocacy report that opens doors for long-term policy change
-
Launch a leadership academy for the next generation of professionals
-
Build a shared service model to save member organizations time and money
-
Upgrade the research database your sector relies on
-
Host the national summit to solve a shared challenge
-
Create a certification that raises the bar for your profession
-
Provide a new member resource hub to boost onboarding
-
Run a public awareness campaign that finally puts your cause on the map
Why Nonprofit Revenue Generation Matters
This is what we mean when we say we’re here to help raise $50 million in new revenue. Not just dollars for the sake of dollars.
We focus on nonprofit revenue generation that powers your mission. Revenue that gives you control—not pressure.
Nonprofit revenue generation isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s the foundation for long-term impact, leadership, and sustainability.
